Adding and removing Spanish VAT
Spain charges VAT (IVA) at a 21% general rate, a 10% reduced rate, and a 4% super-reduced rate. Adding VAT multiplies the net by the rate. Removing VAT divides the gross by one plus the rate to recover the net.
21% general rate
The 21% rate applies to most goods and services. On a net price of 100 the VAT is 21 and the gross is 121.
10% reduced rate
The 10% rate covers items such as some food, hospitality, and passenger transport. Confirm the category before you apply it.
4% super-reduced rate
The 4% rate covers essentials such as staple foods, books, newspapers, and certain medicines. Check the applicable category.
